Update on
Technical Director Greg Carney
Greg Carney remains hospitalized for treatment
of congestive heart failure. Greg is out
of intensive care, but his condition remains
serious. He continues to battle fluid
buildup in his heart and lungs. On a
positive note, Greg is able to do some limited
walking in the hospital. Greg and his
family are appreciative of the continued
outpouring of support he has received from the
GANA family. GANA will keep you updated on
Greg's condition as events warrant.

Releases 23RD Glass Informational Bulletin
The Glass Association of North America (GANA)
announced the release of its 23rd Glass
Informational Bulletin (GIB), a series of
educational documents available to the industry
as a free download on their website. Titled
Blast Mitigating Glazing, the GIB looks at
various tests and standards in the industry for
laminated glazing applications constructed to
mitigate the hazards of a blast or explosion
outside of a building incorporating these
applications.

Announces Free Webinar by Dow Corning
Corporation
The Glass Association of North America (GANA)
announced the first of a series of educational
webinars for the glass and glazing industry. The
webinar, titled Thermal and Energy Modeling of
Two Fenestration Systems in Hot and Cold
Climates, focuses on obtaining and maintaining
long term energy savings and sustainability. The
presentation was written by Lawrence D. Carbary
and Valerie Hayez of Dow Corning Corporation,
and Carbary will be the presenter during the
webinar.

Greenhouse Gas Study
The Glass Association of North America (GANA)
Educational Foundation is now soliciting
donations to fund an in-depth study on high
performance glazing’s impact in the United
States. This will be the first study funded by
the charitable organization.

The Glass Association of North America (GANA)
announced that its new GANA Glazing Manual
is now available for sale on its website at a
special reduced price throughout 2009. The
Manual, a special 50th Anniversary Edition
update and the first update in five years,
represents the rapidly evolving glass and
glazing industry in terms of technology,
products and terminology. Additionally, the 50th
Anniversary Edition of the GANA Glazing Manual
is also the first to include completely original
full color illustrations throughout the
publication.

Severe U.S. recession has sharply reduced the
flow of funds to Social Security and Medicare,
tied to declining payroll taxes resulting from
the loss of 5.7 million jobs during the past 18
months. According to the Social Security and
Medicare Trustees in a report issued on May 12,
2009, Social Security is now expected to stop
running modest surpluses in seven years, one
year earlier than previously estimated.

Four Named to GICC Hall of Recognition
(TOPEKA) - The Glazing Industry Code Committee (GICC)
announced today that it has honored four former
members of the organization by naming them to
its Hall of Recognition. The Hall was created
by GICC in late 2008 as a way to honor those in
the glazing code arena who have helped make a
positive difference. Named to the Hall were Don
Belles, Peter Draghetti, Leo Karas and the late
Don Vild.

Bystronic Glass: New Frame Bending Robot
(Aurora, CO) –Bystronic glass, a leader in
thermally optimized "Warm edge" spacer systems,
has a new frame bending innovation: the
spacerbender MULTI robot. This system has a new,
height-adjustable transport rail that allows for
the bending of stainless steel, steel and
aluminium as well as a variety of plastic
spacers.

ASTM Looking at Safer Glass Handling
ASTM has formed a new subcommittee within ASTM
E34 on Occupational Health and Safety that will
be focused on developing standards for safer
glass handling. According to the ASTM magazine,
"Recent accidents involving annealed glass have
heightened industry and US OSHA interest in
establishing standards to improve safety and
health in the industry. The standardization
effort of Subcommittee E34.35 on Safe Handling
of Flat Glass will focus on practical personal
protective equipment as well as levels of
protection for various tasks in handling
annealed glass."
