Glass Week, BEC Conference Pack Huge Punch
With more than 850 registered attendees for the 2008 Glass Week/Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Conference in Las Vegas, not only were records for attendance to one single GANA event set, but responses from those attending were overwhelmingly positive.

"The keynote speakers were incredible," wrote one attendee. "I think that this was the best ever! The content was excellent," added another. The four keynotes for the events included Jee Thredgold, an economist with a semi-rosy outlook for the future, space shuttle astronaut Mike Mullane who spoke about the importance of teamwork, Shep Hyken who emphasized the creation of "moments of magic" in customer service, and Mike Eruzione, who overcame a strong cold to remember his winning goal in the 1980 Olympics hockey game between the United States and the Soviet Union. Eruzione, who drew some of the best speaker scores ever at a GANA event, stayed afterwards to have his picture taken with several of the fans in attendance.

Benchmark Glass Industry Representation by Bill Yanek, GANA EVP
When we last visited in a fall issue of Glass Reflections, I was just embarking on my time as ‘GANA Executive VP’ in-waiting. On February 29, GANA bid farewell to Stan Smith upon his retirement and my time ‘in waiting’ came to an abrupt end. My sincere thanks to Stan for his mentorship during the past six months.

GANA just concluded a fabulously successful joint Glass Week/Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) conference. During Glass Week, GANA Divisions continued their extensive technical work under the direction of Greg Carney and with the support of our new Assistant Technical Director, Urmilla Sowell. Each division is examining the energy issue with a particular focus on The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. In the coming months, GANA will be forging ahead with ‘energized’ advocacy on energy issues, LEED certification, and code development.

Industry Opinion

A Crying Sham(e) by Debra Levy, Publisher, USGlass Magazine
It is time for members of the glass industry to re-evaluate their participation in the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) with careful thought. The NFRC board of directors continues to ignore the votes of the Council regarding the Component Modeling Approach (CMA) as well as a variety of other topics.  The NFRC likes to create the illusion that the commercial glass industry is a participant in the process, but its participation is just that—an illusion.
